Suvisesha Sevika Sangham

The Mar Thoma Suvisesha Sevika Sangham (MTSSS) in Singapore has been an integral and important auxiliary of the Parish since its beginning on 18th May 1952, under the leadership of Rev. T. N. Koshy. It started with 35-members and has now grown to a 303-member strong auxiliary body of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church in Singapore.

In the 75th year, it’s vital to reflect on God’s divine grace and presence that have been the guiding force throughout this journey, on the contributions of the members, past and present and the faithful leadership God raised through these years to guide Sevika Sangham to be a true witness to our Lord and Saviour.

Sevika Sangham is the voice and space for the women in the Church and acknowledges the important roles women play in daily life, the values they cultivate and nurture not only within the families but also in the community. The various needs of its members are taken care of through regular Bible study classes, visiting the Senior Parishioners at their homes, raising funds through ‘Food and Coffee sales’ for its activities and Mission work, Sangham Strides, singing and recording songs to publish on Parish’s YouTube. Sevika Sangham wholeheartedly participates in all activities of the Church.

Sevika Sangham in Singapore is celebrating its 75th year (Platinum Jubilee) in 2026-2027.

Fortnightly Bible study:
It is an ongoing activity held on Zoom at 8:30 pm, led by Achen on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of every month, except the Lent season and in December.

Mission Activities:
Sevika Sangham’s main focus is on Charity and Mission work and strongly supports hands- on mission activities along with financial contributions. Funds are raised from ‘Food and Coffee’ sales.
Apart from packing and delivering food at YWCA, teaching English language and donating clothes at Hagar and spending time doing arts and craft and listening to the seniors at the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH), Sevika Sangham has also participated in the Racial Harmony Celebrations at Bishan Community Club to encourage racial harmony in the community and to create awareness of our Indian heritage.

Senior Parishioners’ House Visits:
It is an ongoing activity, where Sevika Sangham members, along with Achen, visit the homes of the senior parishioners and spend quality time with them, singing, praying and enjoying the fellowship.

Ladies Retreat:
Retreats for ladies are systematically conducted and relevant topics are    chosen. A retreat on ‘Financial Literacy and Women Empowerment for Investing’ was held on 25th October, 2025. The objective of the retreat was to dispel any fear of handling finances and to help women invest wisely. Mr. George Joseph, a seasoned Wealth Manager with DBS Private Bank, was the guest speaker.

Sangham Strides and Virtual Walk:
This ‘walking’ initiative for Sevika Sangham members was first rolled out in 2023. These walks are aimed at fostering well-being, unity and fellowship among the SSS members. It was a venue for many to connect with friends, family, nature and most importantly with themselves. The committee arranges regular Walk challenges that last a month and during these Walk Challenge, only GPS- tracked walks are counted. ‘Finisher Medals’ and ‘Certificate of Achievement’ are awarded to the winners.
Sangham Strides –This half day event is periodically organised for the Sevika Sangham members to walk together a designated distance in a park. The Virtual Walk either commences in a Sangham Strides or culminates in one.

Annual Food Sale:
Sevika Sangham Annual Food Sale is only once a year. The aim is to raise funds for the Mission and outreach programs and activities of Sevika Sangham.

Weekly Coffee Sale:
Sevika Sangham members prepare and serve coffee and snacks after worship service through the course of the year. The area representatives coordinate with their respective area members to arrange the snacks & coffee for each Sunday. There are two counters set up, one outside the pantry and the other in the kitchen, to ease the rush. The amount received from the sales is used to support the activities of Sevika Sangham and its Mission and Outreach programs. Two years back, Sevika Sangham consciously decided to be as environmentally friendly as possible, and continues to use paper cups and plates to serve coffee and snacks.

Sevika Sangham Choir:
This initiative gives every woman an opportunity to sing praises to God.
It not only fosters bonding and fellowship among the members, but for the recording and publishing of these songs on the Parish’s YouTube channel, multiple talents and various auxiliaries of the church come together and collaborate.

The Sevika Sangham Day:
The Sevika Sangham Day is observed on the second Sunday of September, and the theme for the day is as designated by the Sabha. Sevika Sangham members assist Achen during the Holy communion service in various capacities, serving as Deacons, Bible readers, Ushers, Organist and other vital roles. Every year, the Sevika Sangham choir sings the special song (Sevika Sangha Dina Ganam) of the year. The message for Sunday is shared by a Sevika Sangham member.

Sevika Sangham Picnic:
The SSS picnic took place on Saturday, 27th September,2025 at ‘The Gardens by the Bay.’ The members explored the Supertree Grove, the Flower Dome and also spent time playing interesting and interactive games.

Parish In-gathering:
The Parish In-gathering was on 19th April this year. Every year, Sevika Sangham drives and supports the food sale.

Bible Study Fellowship Gathering:
This Fellowship meeting is held to recap the Bible Study sessions and to discuss relevant topics. The first meeting was led by Gino Achen on 30th Nov, 2024 and the next one was on 7th February, 2026. Raj Achen, led an engaging and interactive session on the topic’ ‘Gospel Lessons for Times of Crisis.’ Participants were encouraged to reflect deeply on faith and life challenges. Meaningful summaries of the Bible study sessions that happened over the year were shared.
